The Hodgman Liberal Government is working to increase our renewable energy capacity and secure increased investment and jobs in Tasmania while also improving our on island energy security through the Battery of the Nation initiative.
We believe Tasmania is in a unique position to become the renewable energy battery of the nation, and we have a Plan to make this a reality.
This is a vision shared by the Australian Government which, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), has committed up to $2.5 million to support studies into Tasmania’s Battery of the Nation initiative, and the funding will be matched by Hydro Tasmania.
This will help Tasmania work towards doubling our current clean energy capacity, and will put us in a strong position to supply reliable, affordable and renewable energy to the nation.
Studies will look into the feasibility and locations for pumped hydro energy storage, the redevelopment of the power scheme at Tarraleah, and potential of expanding the output of the Gordon Power Station.
Thirty potential locations for pumped hydro have been identified by Hydro Tasmania, and they will be working to narrow this selection down further.
ARENA have contributed $800,000 from their $2.5 million commitment for these initial studies.
Not only is this work a good opportunity for Tasmania but a significant amount of the opportunities being explored are in the Lyons electorate meaning the potential of greater activity and more jobs for the people of Lyons.
The Liberal Government is proud of Tasmania’s hydroelectric system, and building on our current renewable energy assets will create jobs, stimulate the economy, and most importantly provide renewable and reliable energy.
