Bass Highway upgrades to improve safety

Travel on and across the Bass Highway at Wynyard will be made safer after the approval of funding that will see key intersections upgraded.

The Australian Government has approved $2.3 million towards the joint project, with the Tasmanian Government committing $570,000.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Rene Hidding, said the improvements would result in improved road safety for all users travelling on one of the North-West’s most important roads.

“These upgrades are needed to ensure the safety of motorists, and I am very pleased this funding has been approved and the projects can start before the end of the year,” Mr Hidding said.

“The Bass Highway has a very high freight volume and is vitally important to the industries in the State’s North-West and the completion of these projects will be keenly welcomed by the local community.”

“It’s another example of the Australian and Tasmanian Liberal Government’s working together to improve safety on our roads, to the benefit of all road users.”

Liberal Member for Braddon Joan Rylah said the funding would address identified safety issues at the key intersections.

“This series of intersections has long been a concern for locals and it’s great to see that a range of safety issues will be resolved through this joint project,” Mrs Rylah said.

“These upgrades will result in new traffic islands, line markings and a new roundabout at the Calder Road-York Street junction.

“The Deep Creek Road junction will also see improved signage and line markings, which will be a relief for locals who have raised concerns about it after several accidents in the past.

“The Wynyard and neighbouring communities that regularly travel this highway can rest easier knowing we are acting to fix identified safety concerns.”
