Backing local business by doubling the local benefits test

Our Local Benefits Test is designed to grow jobs by making sure Tasmanian businesses have every chance of winning Government tenders - while still ensuring value-for-money for taxpayers.

To further enhance our support for local businesses, the Government is doubling the local benefits test, to a minimum of 20 per cent of the evaluation criteria, for Government Agency procurements.

We are also committed to our target of 90 per cent of all Government contracts to be awarded to Tasmanian-based businesses by 2022, and the 2017-18 figures show:

  • 244 government contracts were awarded to Tasmanian businesses.
  • Total value of government contracts awarded to Tasmanian businesses – $409.5 million (up from $259 million in 2013-14).
  • Percentage of open procurements where Tasmanian businesses competed and gained at least one contract – 97 per cent.

These latest results demonstrate the Government is delivering on our election commitments and is on track to meet our targets.

Yesterday, Deloitte Access Economics confirmed, yet again, that Tasmanian businesses are the most confident in the nation.

When businesses are confident, they invest and hire staff. Last week the ABS has confirmed, that since we were elected, more than 14,600 jobs have been created for Tasmanians.

Our economy is strong, our exports are booming and the Government is implementing policies to ensure that every region of Tasmania can share in the benefits of a thriving economy.

There is no doubt Tasmania is heading in the right direction and all recent economic indicators confirm our long-term plan is working.
