Back to school safety

Motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads with Tasmanian students returning to school across the state next week.

All Tasmanians have a role to play in keeping our kids safe and there are some easy, practical things we can all do to keep our roads accident free during this busy time.

Motorists are urged to take a little extra time on their drives to work, as you are legally required to slow to 40km/h in school zones.

There is no excuse not to slow down, with the Government installing almost 600 electronic speed limit signs in 221 school zones covering 244 schools across the state.

Drivers are also reminded a 40km/h limit applies within 50 metres of a school bus displaying flashing warning lights – regardless of whether the bus is stopped or moving.

Parents also have a role to play in making sure their kids know the basics of road safety – Stop, Look, Listen, Think.

Parents should also avoid parking too close to school crossings and take extra care when dropping off or picking up your children from school. If possible, park on the same side of the road as the school so children don't have to cross the busy road.

The start of the new school year can be a lot to take in and cause children to become distracted and forget the fundamentals, so it's important they are reminded to look left and right before crossing the road.

Children should also be reminded to use school crossings, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights to cross the road. If they're catching bus, make sure they wait until the bus is gone before they cross the road and not walk in front of the bus.

For young cyclists, make sure their bikes are up to the task, ensure they wear bright clothes to increase visibility and remind them to keep their helmets on.

It's every Tasmanian's responsibility to keep our roads safe and I urge everyone to be a little extra careful and patient as we get into the swing of the 2015 school year.
