The Tasmanian Government has placed a strong focus on supporting and creating jobs as we recover from the impacts of COVID-19, with connecting people to jobs and reskilling a key component of our recovery plan.
Our plan to increase Tasmania’s skilled workforce is working, with apprentice and Trainee figures in July 2020 recording 366 brand new apprentice and trainee commencements.
This is a clear sign of a strengthening economy with commencements only 1 per cent lower than July 2019.
By taking on new apprentices employers are demonstrating renewed confidence in Tasmania’s economy. The most recent data also shows Tasmania continues to have the highest completion rates in the country.
This means apprentices and trainees are more likely to complete their training in Tasmania than anywhere else in the country.
These results have not happened by accident, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has introduced a range of measures to support and create Tasmanian jobs.
Through our $6.3 million Rapid Response Skills Initiative, eligible job seekers are able to immediately access up to $3000 towards the cost of training and up to $500 for employment advice.
‘Skill Up’ is providing a range of low or no cost online short courses through TasTAFE to help boost people’s skills to enhance their employability.
We are also partnering with the Federal Government to deliver JobTrainer which represents a $21 million commitment to deliver up to seven thousand additional free or low cost training places for Tasmanians in areas of jobs growth.
Only the Government has a Plan to support jobs and skill up the workforce of the future.
