Anzac Day 2015: Restrictions on trading hours a mark of respect for our armed forces, past and present

This year, Tasmanians will gather to mark the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.  This is a sacred day for many Tasmanians and it’s important to remind the community of the restrictions to trading hours.

Most shops cannot open before 12.30pm on Anzac Day.  However, there are some exceptions.  Some specialised shops such as pharmacies, service stations and newsagents are exempt from this restriction, as are shops with fewer than 10 employees.

Sporting events (except children’s sporting events), race meetings and entertainment activities at which an admittance fee is charged, also cannot commence before 12.30pm.

Events such as shows, fetes, fairs, markets or trade exhibitions where goods are sold cannot commence before 12.30pm.

For this reason Salamanca Market has been moved for this weekend from its traditional Saturday to Sunday, 26 April.

Anzac Day this year falls on a Saturday and this is the public holiday. There is no alternative day provided under the Statutory Holidays Act 2000 and Monday, 27 April is not a public holiday.  The Government believes that the day to commemorate the contribution and sacrifice is on ANZAC Day itself.
