The arrival of Sun Princess in Hobart today marks the start of the biggest cruise season in Tasmanian history.
About 2,900 passengers and crew from the Sun Princess will spend the day exploring our capital city and surrounds.
We’re expecting up to 130 cruise ship visits across all Tasmanian ports this season for a total of 341,101 passenger days.
That’s a 44 per cent increase in passenger days on the previous year and testament to our strong and increasing reputation as a must see destination.
We are committed to growing Tasmania as a cruise destination because ship visits generate activity that underpins tour operators and attractions across the State, particularly within regions.
This season cruise ships will visit Hobart, Burnie, Port Arthur, Wineglass Bay, Beauty Point and King Island.
Passengers and crew visit historic sites/attractions, they shop and dine at local restaurants and cafes and overwhelmingly rate our shore-based experience very highly at each port.
As a Government we have worked closely with TasPorts to improve infrastructure, including at Burnie Port where the construction of the $1.5 million mooring dolphin will enable almost all cruise ships sailing in Australian waters to visit.
Tasmania’s visitor economy is going from strength to strength and we’ll continue working to see that more people, particularly those in regional Tasmania, continue to benefit from increasing demand from cruise lines to visit Tasmania
