Animal Welfare Advisory Committee Appointed

Today I have officially announced the appointment of Tasmania’s next Animal Welfare Advisory Committee.

The Hodgman Majority Liberal Government recognises the importance of having a robust animal welfare system.

In our first term, we improved the Animal Welfare Act by increasing the penalty for aggravated cruelty to up to five years, and strengthened penalties across the board to send a strong message and deter against acts of animal cruelty.

The role of the Committee is to provide advice to Government on animal welfare matters, with members bringing expertise from relevant industry organisations, veterinary experts, community and recreation based organisations representing animal welfare.

The committee members are:

  • Mr Mark Sayer - (Chair)
  • Dr Jane Dunnett - University of Tasmania
  • Dr. Craig. J. Dwyer - Australian Veterinary Association
  • Ms Allison Horswill - Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association
  • Mr David Moser - Local Government Association of Tasmania
  • Ms Lisa Edwards - RSPCA Tasmania
  • Ms Glenys Oogjes - Animals Australia
  • Mr Tristan Nichols - representing the intensive animal industry including the pig and poultry industries
  • Mr Peter Darke - representing the sporting and recreational users of animals
  • Dr Alicia Fuller - a person nominated by the Secretary of DPIPWE in relation to racing
  • Mr Russell Hunter - a person nominated by the Secretary of DPIPWE from Biosecurity Tasmania Division
  • Ms Rebecca Pinto - a person nominated by the Secretary of DPIPWE from Natural and Cultural Heritage Division

I would like to thank the previous Committee for their contribution to animal welfare, and I look forward to working closely with the new Committee in this important area.
