AHAP 1 on track to deliver more homes for Tasmanians

The Hodgman Liberal Government’s Affordable Housing Strategy is helping more people into homes across Tasmania.

In Budget Estimates today I was able to deliver an update on the targets contained within our first Action Plan, as we approach 30 June 2019.

As at the end of May 2019 we had delivered 316 homes of our 372 social housing target – and importantly, we currently have over 100 social houses well under construction, or in the final stages. This includes social houses at stages such as final fit out, pouring the driveway, or completing landscaping.

As at the end of May 2019 we had also assisted a total of 1438 new households of the 1600 target, which includes:

  • 347 households who have been assisted into affordable home ownership; and
  • 291 affordable land lots that have been released.
  • 316 new social housing dwellings have been constructed for those who need social housing support.
  • 269 households have been assisted into affordable private rentals; and
  • 111 new units of homeless accommodation have been provided.

It is extremely disappointing that Ms Standen and Ms White are wilfully ignorant of the targets we set at the start of the first Action Plan, and would rather play silly political games.

We know there is more work to do, which is why we are investing an additional $125 million into Stage Two of our Affordable Housing Strategy, taking our total investment into affordable housing to almost $200 million over eight years – the largest ever state investment into affordable housing in Tasmania’s history.

Importantly, we have allocated almost $68 million in the 2019-20 financial year to boost the supply of new social and affordable homes. This is in addition to the $30 million housing investment under the Hobart City Deal.

We are confident that our major investments and our Affordable Housing Action Plans will boost housing supply and get more Tasmanians into homes.
