Autism Advisory Panel to Help Tasmanians With Autism

The Liberal Government's election promise to set up a panel on autism continuum of care was delivered today with the first meeting of the panel taking place.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects thousands of Tasmanians but it has long been misunderstood and often fails to attract the attention it deserves.

The prevalence of ASD has increased dramatically, and it is growing at a faster rate than any other disability.

The Liberal Government has committed $1 million over four years for a long-term strategy for improved care for people with ASD.

The Autism Advisory Panel  will develop the strategy, which will include recommendations for early testing options for autism and the best means for delivering education and practical help for parents.

It will also include professional development for health and education workers, and will assess the viability of clinics that test for and treat co-morbidities of autism.

The advisory panel will be chaired by Ms Cassie LeFevre, a Clinical Psychologist with 17 years experience working with children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The panel also includes representatives from Education, Health and Human Services, the National Disability Insurance Agency, and community sector organisations including Autism Tasmania and St Giles Society.
