Aboriginal artists supported in their professional and artistic development

The Tasmanian Government is pleased to announce the successful recipients of the 2017 Aboriginal Arts funding program.

The Government is committing $26,160 in 2017 through Arts Tasmania  that will support six Aboriginal artists to develop projects across a variety of art forms including writing, dance, music and visual arts.

This year’s recipients demonstrate the capacity Aboriginal artists have for sharing Tasmania’s unique cultural and contemporary histories through their arts practice.

Launceston based emerging visual artist, Rodney Gardner will receive funding to undertake a mentorship towards developing a body of work for his first solo exhibition.

Hobart based musical team Doug Mansell and Codie Mansell will receive funding to undertake a mentorship assisting in the passing down of Island songs and music from grandfather to grandson.

Hobart based arts and cultural worker Ruth Langford will receive funding to deliver a three-day culturally specific workshop for local Tasmanian Aboriginal printmakers and bush dye artists.

Launceston based emerging writer Adam Thompson will receive funding to undertake a mentorship to assist him in completing twelve short stories for publication in 2017.

Hobart based emerging visual artist Grace Williams will receive funding through Ten Days on the Island to participate in a collaboration with New Caledonian artist Nicolas Molé and local artist Ben (Jamin) Kluss for the Ten Days on the Island 2017 festival.

Hobart based dancer Craig Everett will receive funding to undertake a skills development intensive residency working with nationally renowned cultural performer Sete Tele at Launceston’s Tasdance Studio.

The Tasmanian Government’s Aboriginal Arts program provides grants to assist the professional and artistic development of Aboriginal artists and arts workers in Tasmania, to support contemporary arts practice across all art forms as well as ensuring the continuation of traditional art and cultural practices.
