I welcome the University of Tasmania lodging the development application with the Burnie City Council today for the North-West Coast’s new campus at West Park.
The Hodgman Liberal Government has invested $15 million into the West Park project as a part of our $90 million investment into the Northern Cities Projects.
The West Park development application is a significant step towards delivering a contemporary and smart campus for not only Burnie, but the entire North-West Coast.
Moving the university’s campus and new contemporary teaching facilities to West Park will lead to another wave of economic growth for Burnie and the region, generating millions of dollars in construction work and 350 jobs for the area, including hundreds across the construction phase, of which 20 per cent will be apprenticeships and traineeships.
The new West Park campus will allow for more course offerings, increased enrolments and a greater collaboration with TasTAFE to build a stronger partnership in post-school education.
The development will also see a revitalisation of Burnie’s CBD, with a vibrant student population, investment opportunities and increased economic activity.
Construction is expected to commence in April next year, with the campus due to open in time for the first semester in 2021.
