The Liberal Government is opening the public discussion on whether to make the Tasmanian Devil our state's official animal emblem.
Tasmania is currently the only state not to have an official animal emblem. The Devil is recognised around the world as uniquely Tasmanian and we believe it is a very worthy contender to be our first official animal emblem.
Declaring a formal faunal emblem provides states and territories with an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and promote their unique native fauna. We believe it can only be a positive for Tasmania's brand to be officially associated with this unique creature which is recognised around the world.
Giving this recognition to the Tasmanian Devil could also help attract resources to the important fight to save this iconic creature. Although the Devil's future is now looking more secure than it has at any time over the past decade, there is still so much more to do to ensure healthy, sustainable populations in the wild.
We want to hear your views on whether we should recognise to Devil in this way.
For the next six weeks we are inviting Tasmanians to contact us and share their opinion on making the Devil our official animal emblem.
The Government will make a decision at the end of the public consultation period.
