The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will set sail for Hobart tomorrow marking the milestone 70th anniversary of the blue water classic.
Since 1945 when nine yachts raced south, capturing the imagination of the nation, the Sydney to Hobart has forged a reputation for being one of the truly great ocean classics.
Tomorrow 117 yachts, including the fastest super-maxis on the water, crewed by the best in the world, will turn right out of Sydney Heads and point due south toward our island home.
This year 10 Tasmanian yachts are taking on the challenge, with more than 100 Tasmanian sailors testing their local knowledge aboard local, national and international entries.
It's a testament not only to the brut challenge of the race but the warm hospitality of Sydney and Hobart that the race continues to grow and attract the world's best, decade after decade.
While the yachts have changed dramatically, the fascination with the race has not.
Crews can be assured as they set sail tomorrow that they have the best wishes of Tasmanians, who will follow their course keenly.
The spectacular image of the fleet racing up the River Derwent, to the only river finish of any major ocean race, is a sight to behold, and one that is beamed to millions across the globe.
With the eyes of the world watching there's no doubt the Sydney to Hobart will help further grow our great tourism industry.
