30 percent price rise in water and sewage bills not acceptable

The response from the local government owners of Taswater to my calls for increased investment has been extremely disappointing.

Rather than acknowledging the problem, they've made excuses, tried to down-play the issue, and held out the begging bowl.

For them, it isn't our universally inadequate water and sewage system which is the problem, it was the fact that I aired it on a "national stage" which was the issue.

Much better we just sweep this dirty little secret under the carpet, apparently.

The Government makes absolutely no apologies for calling this issue as it is, and demanding action - it impacts our health, our environment, and our brand.

What has largely gone unremarked to date is that in order to deliver even the current unacceptably slow improvements, water and sewage prices are forecast to rise a staggering 30 percent over the next six years.

That means on average over that period, household water and sewerage bills will have increased by around $340 and in total households will have paid an additional $1100 to foot the bill.

At Friday's meeting I will be asking councils to justify this price rise, and explain how they think that Tasmanians should pay a 30 percent increase for inferior services, while they continue to take massive dividends for themselves.
