26TEN Employer Grants can improve skills

26TEN Employer Grants unveiled today at the Burnie Community House will improve the literacy and numeracy skills of its Tasmanian workforce.

The $46,000 26TEN grant is helping Burnie Community House find effective and innovative ways to ensure employees, volunteers and work for the dole participants can understand, and safely participate in, all parts of the food production enterprise business.

A community-based non-profit organisation, Burnie Community House is committed to providing support services and employment pathways for its workforce, while providing nutritious and healthy food for the community.

With 26TEN Week (24-29 October) activities being held across the state next week, I’d also like to publically acknowledge the 461 member organisations and supporters that have joined 26TEN, as well as the 1303 volunteers who have completed training to be adult literacy tutors.

With close to 50 per cent of Tasmanians not having the literacy and numeracy skills needed for life in a technologically-rich world the Hodgman Liberal Government is working to ensure we improve on this statistic for our more vulnerable Tasmanians.

The positive impact of 26TEN projects such as here at the Burnie Community House have on the state’s future is clear, and I commend them for taking action to address this important issue in their own community. For more information about 26TEN, visit www.26ten.tas.gov.au
