250 more teachers in our classrooms

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to continuing to improve education in Tasmania through providing the best possible education to our students, including more teachers in our classrooms.

Today marks the first step of our Plan to employ 250 additional teachers over the next six years.

More teachers is one of the key actions in our 100 Day Plan to ensure we hit the ground running to grow the economy, create more jobs and invest in essential services, like education.

This is a collaborative process and today I am inviting key education workforce stakeholders, including the Australian Education Union, University of Tasmania, Tasmanian Principals Association, Department of Education, Teachers Registration Board and the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment to work with me to plan the initial teacher training and employment of 250 more teachers.

Our work together will begin with a round table within the next month.

The focus will be on planning the workforce, ensuring additional teaching staff have the skills necessary to improve results in key areas of literacy and numeracy, student engagement and early years education.

The round table will also inform a Department of Education Workforce Strategy to ensure we have a teaching workforce which meets our needs and teachers are working in areas where they have specific subject expertise.

The Hodgman Government’s targeted investment in education and the resources required to support it will ensure Tasmania has a job ready generation of young people with the skills to participate in a modern economy.
