2017 Resilient Australia Awards

It was my pleasure today to present the 2017 Resilient Australia Awards to Tasmanian recipients.

The Awards are a national program to recognise and promote initiatives which strengthen community disaster resilience, sponsored by the Federal Attorney-General’s Department in conjunction with the States and Territories.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to better protecting all Tasmanians from threats to their way of life, which is why we came to office promising to significantly increase fuel reduction burning across Tasmania to better protect towns from dangerous bushfires. In great news, the success of this policy has today been recognised with the Fuel Reduction Unit receiving the 2017 Resilient Australia Government Award.

Disaster resilience is about making our communities safer, stronger and better prepared to manage natural disasters and by celebrating innovation and best practice, the awards showcase work that is often unrecognised, inspiring others to think about how they can be more disaster resilient.

The three Tasmanian Resilient Australia Award recipients are:

2017 Resilient Australia School Award:

  • Dunalley Primary School for ‘Rebuilding Dunalley Primary School After the 2013 Fires’

2017 Resilient Australia Government Award:

  • Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) for ‘Fuel Reduction Unit’

Highly Commended:

  • Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPAC) for the ‘TasAlert Translation Project’

2017 Resilient Australia People’s Choice Photography Award (with equal votes):

  • Richard Cowling (Tasmania Police) for ‘Approaching Storm’
  • Peter Middleton (TFS) for ‘Bushfire-Ready Neighbourhoods in Action’

I congratulate all of the award winners and look forward to the national awards and look forward to the Federal Minister for Justice, the Hon Michael Keenan MP, announcing the three national awards in November 2017.
