The Hodgman Liberal Government welcomes the release of 2017 NAPLAN results which show Tasmanian students are doing well with increased investment in education including more teachers, support staff, and literacy and numeracy specialists since 2014.
The report shows Year 3 is Tasmania’s strongest year level, with significant improvements in Reading, and Grammar and Punctuation.
Results statistically are comparable with 2016 for all year levels and assessments. While the report indicates Tasmania’s strongest area is Reading, Year 5 Numeracy results have also improved significantly over time.
Today’s report also shows the high performance of our female students, who are performing at or above the national mean for all literacy domains and year levels.
Tasmanian Indigenous students continue to have higher mean scores, for every year level and domain, compared to Indigenous students nationally.
In early November we recognised approximately 280 Tasmanian government school students who excelled in the 2017 NAPLAN testing with special ceremonies being held across the state.
Around 25,000 Tasmanian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Government, Catholic and Independent schools undertook the tests in May.
We know there is still more work to be done to continue to lift education standards by improving literacy and numeracy, and initiatives such as our Working Together for Three-Year-Olds program will provide the early access to education disadvantaged Tasmanian children miss out on so all students can look forward to a brighter future.
