2016-17 Budget: Investing in education

After two years of a Hodgman Liberal Government, the budget and the state are now back on track, and we can reinvest in essential services like school infrastructure.

Today I am pleased to announce the second new school infrastructure investment that will be included in the upcoming State Budget.

One of Tasmania’s fastest growing primary schools, Lenah Valley, will receive $3 million for a two year capital works project that will commence this financial year.

This new financial commitment will create new learning areas and refurbish existing general learning areas, creating high quality facilities that support learning and student engagement.

The significant new infrastructure works will address an increase in demand being experienced at Lenah Valley, where student numbers have increased by almost 10 per cent since 2012.

This is in addition to the $2.5 million capital investment at Riverside Primary School, which I announced earlier this month.

These new investments in education infrastructure will not only ensure students have a contemporary learning environment, but will continue to drive economic growth and jobs through the planning and construction phases.

The $95 million, four year, Education Capital Investment Program announced in last year’s budget is already transforming schools across the state.

These projects are ensuring Tasmanian students have access to contemporary and flexible learning facilities where they have the greatest opportunity to explore their passions and discover a path to their future career.

As a Government we are committed to improving educational outcomes with structural change, targeted investment and prioritising students with greatest need.
