2015 Tasmanian Athlete of the Year – and the winner is…

STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL 7:50PM

Cyclist Amy Cure is a worthy winner of the title of 2015 Tasmanian Athlete of the Year.

This is Amy’s third consecutive year as a finalist for this award and it caps off a stellar year in which she won gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2015 World Cycling Track Championships.

The gold medal came after a record-breaking time in the Women’s Team Pursuit in which the team smashed four-time defending champion Great Britain in the final.

It was the third World Championship Amy has participated in during her career, and in which she claimed eight medals in addition to a silver and bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Amy is a very worthy winner and, at just 22 years of age, is an inspiration to all Tasmanian athletes.

Amy joins a prestigious list of winners such as Daniel Geale (boxing) in 2012, Richie Porte (cycling) in 2013 and Eddie Ockenden (hockey) last year.

The Tasmanian Athlete of the Year is determined by a panel of judges from Communities, Sport and Recreation, the TIS and Tasmanian sports journalists.

Competition for the award was very high, with the other 2015 finalists being Grant Birchall (AFL), James Faulkner (cricket), Todd Hodgetts (athletics), Eddie Ockenden (hockey) and Richie Porte (cycling).
