125th anniversary of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery

The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery represents the very best of Launceston and Northern Tasmania.

As Australia’s largest regional museum it is recognised nationally and internationally for the quality of its collection and the generations of dedicated men and women who have forged that reputation.

To mark the 125th anniversary, I am delighted today to officially open, The World Inside: 125 Years of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, on behalf of the Premier.

The exhibition explores the life and work of Mr Herbert Hedley Scott.

Mr Scott was the first full time curator at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and served in the role for over 40 years.  Herbert Scott’s dedication was instrumental in developing and growing QVMAG.  His contribution has had a long lasting positive impact for both science and the arts for our community.

The exhibition has been developed in partnership with the Scott family.

It showcases pieces from the vast museum collections of science, art and history by displaying chosen objects together with artworks by contemporary Tasmanian artist Dr Mary Scott, the great grand-daughter of Herbert Hedley Scott.

I also acknowledge that this year represents another significant anniversary for the museum as it marks 30 years of volunteer gallery guides at the QVMAG.  The passion and dedication of generations of volunteers has greatly enriched the museum experience for the general public.      I wish to pass on my congratulations to all those involved in the volunteer gallery guides program on reaching this significant milestone and thank each of you for your contribution.

The exhibition is the first of many special events and public programs to mark the QVMAG’s anniversary throughout 2016.
