Southern councils are being urged to apply for a government loans scheme which will allow important community infrastructure projects to be brought forward to stimulate the economy, create jobs and provide better local facilities.
The number one priority for the Hodgman Liberal Government is to create jobs, especially in regional Tasmania, and 8400 jobs have been created since we came to Government.
The Tasmanian Economic Stimulus Scheme follows a highly successful pilot in the North and North-West.
Last year we trialled this innovative program by partnering with councils in the North and North-West to bring forward much needed infrastructure projects and stimulate regional economies and create jobs.
More than a dozen councils grabbed this opportunity and nominated 45 projects worth nearly $50 million to deliver long-lasting infrastructure upgrades for the community.
In the State Budget a further $60 million was made available for any of Tasmania’s 29 councils to apply to bring forward infrastructure projects, from road repairs to upgrading sports and community facilities.
The Tasmanian Government will provide the funding required upfront and interest free, with the councils receiving rebates on the interest costs on their project borrowings for up to five years.
If the full $60 million is taken up, it is estimated that it would support up to 800 direct and indirect jobs right around the State. It will also help councils deliver projects that will improve public infrastructure which not only benefits local communities but also the growing number of visitors that are coming to the State.
Applications from councils will close at the end of August.
By delivering a balanced budget the Hodgman Liberal Government is able to offer innovative programs like the Tasmanian Economic Stimulus Scheme which will help build Tasmania’s future.
