$13 million in tenders to improve schools

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to improving educational outcomes to ensure future prosperity of young Tasmanians and the state.

To achieve this we are making targeted investment, structural change and prioritising students with greatest need.

This includes undertaking the single biggest infrastructure investment in high schools in 20 years, which is part of our $94.9 million investment in critical new infrastructure to improve learning outcomes.

I am pleased to announce today that work at nine Tasmanian Government schools will be underway by the end of this month, with $13.05 million worth of projects being awarded to local employers, including:

  • Meadcon Pty Ltd for the provision of additional flexible learning area at Cooee Primary School. Works will commence this month with completion expected in June 2016. The project is worth an estimated $500,000.   
  • Fairbrother Pty Ltd will refurbish existing areas to provide modern contemporary flexible learning environments at Cressy District High School. Works will commence this month with completion expected in June 2016. The project is worth an estimated $1.7 million.   
  • Bennett Construction Pty Ltd will refurbish existing areas to provide modern contemporary science facilities for Rokeby High School. Works will this month with completion expected in June 2016.  The project is worth an estimated $1.5 million.   
  • Wyatt Constructions Pty Ltd is extending the Kindergarten at Westerway Primary School. Works will commence this month, with completion expected in June 2016. This project is worth an estimated $400,000.   
  • Tascon Constructions Pty Ltd to refurbish additional learning areas at Margate Primary School. Works will be commencing this month with completion expected in June 2016. The project is worth an estimated $450,000.   
  • Vos Constructions Pty Ltd to refurbish science labs and prep room at Sheffield District High School. Works commenced in February with completion expected in June 2016. The project is worth an estimated $500,000.  
  • Stubbs Constructions Pty Ltd will refurbish general learning areas and specialist facilities; including new science and music suites and refurbished library and ICT areas at Smithton High School. Works will commence this month with completion expected in June 2017.  The project is worth an estimated $7 million.   
  • Wyatt Constructions Pty Ltd to refurbish additional learning areas for Springfield Gardens Primary School. Works commenced in February with completion expected in June 2016. The project is worth an estimated $600,000.   
  • Back in a Flash Constructions to upgrade the multiple purpose hall at Strahan Primary School commencing this month with completion expected in June 2016. The total cost of the project is estimated at $400,000.

These projects are part of that commitment to ensure students have access to contemporary, inclusive and flexible facilities where they have the greatest opportunity to explore their passions and discover a path to their future career.

It is also part of a strategic investment in our state’s infrastructure that will drive economic growth and create jobs from planning to construction.
