Tourism
Our beautiful island State continues to grow as a vibrant tourist destination. Since the Labor Government’s election in 1998, the number of visitors to Tasmania continues to increase and investment in new tourism developments is at record levels.
Tasmania now attracts more visitors to our shores every year than our total population. In 2006/2007, over 820,000 people came to uncover the many treasures that as locals we’ve always known about. During their stay these visitors spent a record $1.32 billion and the average visitor is staying here longer. This makes tourism a strong economic driver for our state and the industry a significant employer.
By working even more closely with the tourism industry the Tasmanian Government is striving to build on the impressive growth of the past nine years. The domestic tourism market is challenging. However we are confident that with our new strategic direction, the increased resources that have been provided to Tourism Tasmania and our new contemporary marketing campaigns we can further develop Tasmania’s tourism industry.
The Arts
Tasmania is unique, innovative and creative. There is no doubt that our identity is both shaped and enriched by our arts and cultural sector.
The Tasmanian Government is committed to our State being an island where innovation and creativity are highly valued. We have made record investments in arts and culture, announcing an historic 20% increase in recurrent funding for Arts Tasmania in the 2007-2008 Budget. This funding will provide much needed additional support for individual artists and many of our much-loved arts companies and organisations.
The Tasmanian Government is currently working closely with the arts community to develop an exciting new vision for the future to strengthen the vitality of our arts sector. This vision - An Island Inspired - will strive to recognise the significant contribution the arts makes to communities right across the state and will contain a number of goals and initiatives. This will enable the State to develop an even more dynamic and diverse cultural scene.
