New Car Park for the LGH
The Tasmanian Government is continuing to deliver the largest investment in the history of the Launceston General Hospital, with the opening today of the new $15 million car park.
The Premier, Lara Giddings, and the Minister for Health, Michelle O'Byrne, today opened the car park which will make it safer and easier for patients, families and staff to access the LGH.
The car park is an important piece of the $110 million capital upgrade, bringing the total number of spaces in the LGH precinct to around 1000.
"The opening of the new car park is another important milestone in the $110 million building program - the largest capital expansion in the history of the LGH," Ms Giddings said.
"Planning for this redevelopment began when I was Health Minister and a new car park was always high on the list of priorities to provide patients and their families with easy access to essential services.
"This will have a huge impact in reducing congestion around the hospital and ensure that patients and their families have one less stress to deal with when they need to visit the hospital.
"The State Government's investment has so far delivered a new Emergency Department and new Neo-Natal, Day Surgery and Acute Medical Units with more to come."
Ms O'Byrne said there had been chronic parking problems at the LGH for many years and the new car park will help resolve the issue.
"Patients, visitors and residents in the area will all benefit but importantly, our hard working staff now have access to safe, convenient parking," she said.
"The massive and ongoing redevelopment of the hospital is creating a modern, world-class facility delivering more efficient and effective health care services - but construction comes with disruption and the completion of the car park will be a welcome dose of convenience.
"I would like to acknowledge the support of the Launceston City Council and the surrounding community for their patience during the construction period."
The car park is accessed via Cleveland Street and Frankland Street.
It includes monitored closed circuit television cameras as well as lifts to improve security and access.
Car parking fees are set at $1.50 an hour for public parking, capped at a maximum of $6 a day.
