The Premier, Lara Giddings, and Lord Mayor, Ald. Damon Thomas, today announced the State would be hosting a welcome home celebration in partnership with the Tasmanian Olympic Council. The Tasmanian event is part of a national calendar of welcome home events, beginning with a street parade in Sydney on Monday 20 August. More than a dozen Olympians, including a number of Tasmanian athletes, are expected at the event on Hobart's Parliament House lawns from 11am to 12.30pm. "Tasmanians have been following the London Games very closely, whether they are watching favourite sports or athletes, or discovering new sports and new heroes," Ms Giddings said. "The year we have a record number of Tasmanian athletes competing and I am sure many people will relish the opportunity to celebrate their efforts and achievments. "One of the highlights so far was in the rowing, with a fast finishing Kate Hornsey winning a silver medal in a very close finish in the women's pair. "Tim Deavin and Eddie Ockenden will play off for bronze in the Kookaburras hockey side. "Other notable performances from Tasmanian athletes has also came from rowing with Dana Faletic and Kerry Hore finishing fourth in the women's quadruple scull and Sam Beltz and Anthony Edwards also finishing fourth in the Lightweight men's four. Alderman Thomas said the Council was very honoured to be hosting the Tasmanian welcome home celebrations in Hobart. "We will be making sure it is an exciting event for the athletes and Tasmanians," Ald. Thomas said. "I know from my family's own involvement in elite sport that the support of spectators means the world to athletes and they greatly appreciate a chance to meet their fans in person." Ms Giddings said the athletes would be signing autographs and there would also be lots of free activities for children, including a chance to try an Olympic sport such as rowing, cycling or hockey with the Tasmanian Institute of Sport. "This event is a great opportunity for Tasmanians to meet their heroes, but also for the athletes to thank those who have supported them in their Olympic journey," Ms Giddings said. "We will know in the next week or so which athletes will be part of our Hobart celebrations and Tasmanians can visit the event's facebook page or website to get the latest updates."
