Information about Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks is now available at your finger-tips.

The Parks and Wildlife Service has developed a free new application for Apple devices, highlighting Tasmania as Australia's best walking destination.

The Environment, Parks and Heritage Minister, Brian Wightman, said Tasmania has more than 2,000 kilometres of trails to suit all experience levels - from beginners to seasoned adventurers.

"Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks is a fantastic tourism product," Mr Wightman said.

"It brings together two of Tasmania's strengths - our beautiful natural environment, and innovative use of technology.

"The new app gives locals and visitors a wealth of information about these walking opportunities, straight from their iPhones, iPads and iPods.

"It's been developed by walkers for walkers, and features simple maps, safety advice, and tips on caring for the environment.

"There are 200 beautiful photographs - including images from professional photographers and walkers. The app also features first-hand stories from walkers who've experienced the various trails," he said.

The Minister for Tourism, Scott Bacon, commended the Parks and Wildlife Service for working to ensure Tasmania's great walks were easily accessible to visitors.

"Our magnificent trails are one of Tasmania's key drawcards," Mr Bacon said.

"Given the growing reliance on information provided either via the Internet or smartphones, it's essential we work to ensure visitors can have easy access to all the information they need to enjoy some of these great experiences.

"This app is a great way to ensure visitors have all the information they need in one easily accessible source," he said.

App users can nominate their favourite walks, add their own notes, and share their experience via social media.

The Parks and Wildlife Service has already produced successful apps - including "A Bird in the Hand" and "Frog Log", which showcase Tasmania's native birds and frogs.

The 60 Great Short Walks program is a co-operative project between the Parks and Wildlife Service, Forestry Tasmania, Tourism Tasmania and the Wellington Park Management Trust.

It's available from the iTunes app store.
