Tasmania's reputation as an artistic leader has been strengthened with an impressive showing at Monday night's 2012 Helpmann Awards, hosted at the Sydney Opera House.

The Premier and Minister for the Arts, Lara Giddings, today congratulated the three Tasmanian winners.

- Best Presentation for Children: BoatsTerrapin Puppet Theatre

- Best Contemporary Music Festival: MONA FOMAMuseum of Old and New Art

- Best Regional Touring Production: NamatjiraBig hART, created with the Namatjira family

The Helpmann Awards recognise achievement and excellence in Australia's live performance industry, spanning musical theatre, comedy, opera, classical music, theatre and dance.

"The awards are the pinnacle of recognition in the performing arts, in a similar way to the Tony Awards on Broadway and the Laurence Olivier Awards in London," Ms Giddings said.

"This is fantastic recognition for organisations which were pitted against the very best that the country has to offer.

"As an illustration of the calibre of these awards, other winners included Cate Blanchet who won best female actor in the Sydney Theatre Company's play 'Gross und Klein',

"The fact Tasmania produced three winners is a demonstration of the depth of talent in our performing arts industry.

"As a State, we have a significant number of people who work with - and create economic, social and cultural value from - their creative imaginations. It is not only a matter of personal expression but a lever of social and business success."

Ms Giddings said the Awards supported the Government's investment in Tasmania's arts and creative sector, which is delivering economic and social benefits.

"It is extremely fulfilling to see Terrapin Puppet Theatre, Museum of Old and New Art and Big hART recognised for their outstanding work in the arts.

"In addition, major events such as MONA FOMA can be powerful tourism drivers for Tasmania, attracting visitors from interstate and overseas - especially when combined with a visit to the Museum of Old and New Art and other arts experiences around the state."
