School reports will provide snapshot of child's progress

Fri 20 July 2012

Nick McKim

Minister for Education and Skills

Tasmanian Government school students will bring home their mid-year school reports over the coming weeks, the Minister for Education and Skills, Nick McKim said today.

Mr McKim said that this year's reports would look slightly different because Tasmania had begun to implement and report on the new Australian Curriculum.

"When the Australian Curriculum is fully implemented, students will be taught the same content regardless of where they live in Australia," Mr McKim said.

"The Australian Curriculum is being implemented progressively with English, Mathematics and Science being the first three subjects to be implemented in 2012.

"This means that the mid-year school reports Tasmanian Government school students take home over the coming weeks will look different from previous years.

"Subjects from the Australian Curriculum will be rated using A-E descriptors, whereas subjects under the Tasmanian Curriculum will continue to be assessed under the system used in previous years.

"Other than that, the report parents receive will be very similar to the ones they have received in the past.

"The reports will still give parents information about their child's overall progress at school."

The President of the State Parents and Friends Association, Jenny Grossmith, said she welcomed the reporting to parents under the Australian Curriculum which has been developed at a national level and is being implemented gradually.

"It is important that parents take the time to read their child's report and discuss it with the child's teacher or principal."
