Slut Walk participants congratulated Sat 13 October 2012 Cassy O'Connor Minister for Human Services The Minister for Human Services, Cassy O'Connor, today joined Tasmanians in the Slut Walk march in Hobart to support Tasmanian women being safe from violence and discrimination in their communities. Ms O'Connor commended those who took part in the march - the second to be held in Tasmania as part of a growing international movement which started in Canada in 2010. "There is too much violence towards women and girls in Australia and while the Tasmanian Government is implementing the National Plan to Prevent Violence Against Women and Children, it is very important that women and men join together to say enough is enough," Ms O'Connor said. "That is exactly what we were saying collectively as we marched peacefully through the city of Hobart today. "It was great to get such strong support from bystanders - women and men - for the message behind the Walk as we walked together today. "The message from Slut Walk is very clear - assaults against women are never justified. "The victims of these assaults are never at fault and we all deserve to be safe when we walk the streets of our city, suburbs and towns across the State. "Any woman who is sexually assaulted should be supported and never made to feel they deserved what they got because of what they wear or where they walk. "I very much admire the men and women who attended the Slut Walk in Hobart today for their courage and their passionate commitment to ending the residual culture of sexism and violence that unfortunately still exists in our society. "It is only by having a strong legal framework and support services in place as we do in Tasmania, as well as speaking up, saying no to sexism, misogyny and domestic and family violence, that we will make the attitudinal change that is needed before women, particularly, can feel truly safe," Ms O'Connor said.
