Minister for Economic Development

The Minister for Economic Development, David O'Byrne MP, today opened an important new link between two of Hobart's most-loved recreation areas, Bellerive Beach and Bellerive Bluff.

"The new Alexandra Esplanade link provides welcome access between these two popular recreation areas, making it easier and safer for cyclists and walkers to enjoy both sites," Mr O'Byrne said.

"The link is another part of the Clarence Foreshore Trail, which is providing Hobart's Eastern Shore community with nearly 20 kilometres of cycle and walking opportunities between Tranmere and Geilston Bay."

The Tasmanian Government has provided $150 000 towards the Alexandra Esplanade link project, and more than $480 000 to Clarence City Council towards the Clarence Foreshore Trail overall.

Mr O'Byrne said the trail was just one of the great outcomes from the $4 million Trails and Bikeways Program run by Sport and Recreation Tasmania.

"Providing safe cycling and walking connections is a major goal for the Tasmanian Government as it improves the liveability of communities and encourages active, and ultimately healthier, lifestyles," Mr O'Byrne said.

"And I am delighted that the Tasmanian Government has been able to partner with the Clarence City Council on this project, as councils play a crucial role in providing sporting and recreational facilities to meet the needs of the community."
