Helping Tasmania's Top Employers Attract Recognition and Staff Thu 24 May 2012 David O'Byrne Minister for Economic Development The Minister for Economic Development, David O'Byrne, today urged Tasmanian businesses to seek the recognition they deserve by entering the 2012 Employer of Choice Awards. This year's awards program was launched in Burnie today. It's Tasmania's premier recognition of employers who go above-and-beyond to support and reward their staff. "We know that workers who feel appreciated, respected and rewarded by their employer often make the most loyal, motivated and productive staff," Mr O'Byrne said. "That makes good relationships between workplace leaders, managers and and staff a win-win for all parties. "As with many parts of Australia, attracting and retaining skilled and talented staff remains one of the key challenges facing employers. "Competition for Tasmanian staff is intense - with an ageing population, and the mining boom attracting some workers to resource-rich areas. "These annual awards are one of the ways the Tasmanian Government is helping businesses meet that challenge. "The title of 'Tasmanian Employer of Choice' gives businesses a big advantage. It's a clear message to would-be staff that your business is a great rewarding place to work," he said. There are 29 'Employers of Choice' in Tasmania, with a record 15 businesses receiving the honours at last year's awards. The awards are open to all businesses employing staff in Tasmania. Previous recipients have said they're regularly approached by high-quality job applicants. Entry forms and guidelines are available from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts, by phoning Business Point on 1800 440026, or at www.development.tas.gov.au/eocawards. DEDTA staff are available to help complete entries and answer any questions. Entries close on Friday September 7th, and there'll be an event to announce the overall winner in November.
