The Minister for Economic Development, David O'Byrne, tonight presented the Hair and Beauty Tasmania Awards - recognising the state's most creative hairdressers and make-up stylists.

The awards have been held annually by the peak body, Hair and Beauty Tasmania, since 2006.

"Tasmania's dynamic hair and beauty sector employs about 1500 people across 450 salons, and offers many apprenticeships for young Tasmanians," Mr O'Byrne said.

"These awards recognise the intricate skills and knowledge needed in the industry.

"They also give young beauticians and hairdressers a great target to aspire to.

"I congratulate tonight's winners on their success, and encourage everyone in the industry to keep expressing themselves and striving to reach their goals," he said.

The winners of the 2012 Health and Beauty Awards are:

First - Danielle Faoskett (Cyber Hair)

Second - Vanessa Cantwell (Cyber Hair)

Third - Rachel Breen (Halcyon Hairdressing)

The State Government is helping business operators build their skills base through the Business Ready program, as part of the Government's Small Business Strategy.

The program offers workshops, coaching and online information on six topics, including:

• Reducing energy consumption and costs

• Marketing products and services

• Planning for the future, including succession planning

• Getting a digital presence, and making the most of online markets.
