Gutwein wrong on forest carbon

Minister for Climate Change

The Minister for Climate Change, Cassy O'Connor MP, today suggested Liberal Shadow Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, read more than one page of the ground-breaking Forest Carbon Study before passing comment on its findings.

Ms O'Connor said the Study examines Carbon stocks and flows across the entire Tasmanian forest estate, looking at the whole picture to determine what impact land management practices have on total Carbon sequestration.

"As Shadow Treasurer, Mr Gutwein should acknowledge and be enthusiastic about the very significant potential economic value of the Carbon stored in our forest landscapes," she said.

"Instead, he seems to have glanced at a page in a report that is 365 pages long, and used a narrow interpretation of the information to prop up the Liberals' head-in-the-sand approach to forestry in Tasmania.

"He does a great disservice to workers suffering as a result of the downturn in the global market for native forest woodchips, as well as current and future generations who will feel the impacts of climate change."

"The Carbon lost through logging in production areas is actually offset by the Carbon sequestered in forests outside production zones.

"It is not true that clearfelling and burning native forests for pulp - which has a very short Carbon life - is a Carbon positive activity.

"It's ironic that the Liberals, a party of climate change deniers who refuse to accept the scientific consensus on global warming are now spuriously relying on the science in the Forest Carbon Study to make a political point.

"A responsible Shadow Treasurer would play a more constructive role in realizing the potential enormous economic benefit that could flow to Tasmania from better managing the Carbon stored in our forests," Ms O'Connor
