Fox baiting information sessions for Coal River communities

Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment

The Fox Eradication Program will host public information sessions in the Coal River Valley this month to inform local communities about fox baiting operations planned for early 2013.

Invasive Species Branch manager Craig Elliott  said the sessions in the Colebrook and Campania areas were part of a wide community information process undertaken in all areas before fox baiting  commenced.

"Landowners in the Campania-Colebrook area will shortly be receiving letters updating them on the eradication effort and inviting them to attend the public information sessions in their area," Mr Elliott said.

"Landowners with core fox habitat on their property will also receive a written request for permission to access their properties for fox baiting and monitoring operations.

"We encourage all members of the community to come to information sessions to hear what is planned and ask questions."

Mr Elliott said the fox baiting community notification process also included direct mail-out of information to landowners and their neighbours in target baiting areas, talks at local schools, placing information in newsletters and newspapers, and installing warning signs when fox baits were placed on any property.

"The Fox Eradication Program makes every effort to ensure information about planned operations reaches the community," Mr Elliott said.

"If people can't make the sessions, the program also has information displays at community events and offers briefings to all stakeholders, such as local councils and community groups."

Mr Elliott emphasised it was important that people were informed about the aims of the strategic baiting program.

"Foxes are a serious threat and we need everyone to be helping in the effort to stop foxes getting a foothold in Tasmania," he said.

"Baiting of core fox habitat on Hobart's western shore was recently completed and we had fantastic support from landowners and councils. With the Tasmanian community and Fox Eradication Program working together, we will have the best chance of stopping foxes from establishing in Tasmania."

The public information sessions will be held at the Colebrook Hall in Colebrook on Tuesday 18 December and at the Campania Hall in Campania on Wednesday 19 December. All sessions will be held from 7.30pm - 8.30pm and time for questions will follow each presentation.

Mr Elliott said that all interested members of the public, and not just those from the local area, were welcome to attend.
