Festival showcases Queenstown's strengths Fri 12 October 2012 Lara Giddings Premier Bryan Green Deputy Premier Download hi-res version Plans for a monument to the resilience and unwavering community spirit of Queenstown have been unveiled on the centenary of the tragic North Lyell Mine disaster. The Premier, Lara Giddings, and Deputy Premier, Bryan Green, joined the Queenstown community to commemorate the centenary and witness the unveiling of plans for the North Lyell Memorial Park concept. "The Memorial Park will commemorate the lives of the 42 miners who lost their lives a century ago, and provide a place of reflection for all who visit here," Ms Giddings said. "The memorial will also promote a greater understanding of the West Coast's cultural identity and its incredibly rich mining history to both visitors and locals alike. "The State Government is proud to be supporting the initiative with a $5000 grant from the Premier's Discretionary Fund." Mr Green said the mine disaster had left a lasting impression on the people of Queenstown and had helped to shape the tight-knit community. "Out of adversity comes strength and resilience and there are few places stronger and more resilient than Queenstown," Mr Green said. "This memorial park will stand as a monument to Queenstown's community spirit and I congratulate everyone involved in the project." The project launch was just one event in the biennial Queenstown Heritage and Arts Festival this weekend. "The festival shows what one small community, with a lot of focus and energy, can do," Ms Giddings said. "With a mix of dramatic retellings of history, art installations, music and food, the quality of the festival program is truly remarkable, and an inspiration to the rest of Tasmania." "Congratulations to the organisers of the Festival for developing such an outstanding program, and to the North Lyell Memorial Park project team, for their vision and determination to share Queenstown's story," Ms Giddings said.
