Battle of El Alamein commemoration Tue 23 October 2012 Scott Bacon Minister for Veterans' Affairs The Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Scott Bacon, has paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Tasmanians who served at the Battle of El Alamein. A function to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein was held at Parliament House in Hobart this afternoon, with a number of Tasmanians who fought at El Alamein attending. Mr Bacon said the Battle of El Alamein has often been described as a turning point in World War Two, and it was important to commemorate the event. "All Tasmanians owe a debt of gratitude to those who have served in the armed forces," he said. "This event is an opportunity to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of those people who served in this important battle. "It's also a chance to say thank you to those El Alamein veterans who still live in Tasmania." Mr Bacon thanked representatives from the Tasmanian Branch of the Returned Services League and the Historical Arms and Military Society of Tasmania for their work in organising this afternoon's function.
