Affordable housing investment gets results

Minister for Human Services

The Minister for Human Services, Cassy O'Connor, has welcomed a further drop in Tasmania's public housing waiting list.

Ms O'Connor said the release today of the quarterly Your Health and Human Services Progress Chart has shown the waiting list for public housing is at its lowest level for four years, as well as an increase in the number of people securing public housing over the past twelve months.

"This is the result of the State and Federal Government's record investment in affordable housing, as well as the hard work of Housing Tasmania, which has seen 1,400 new, affordable homes delivered between the beginning of 2009 and June 2012," she said.

"Through this investment, and our ongoing commitment to reforming the public housing sector, the public housing wait list has decreased by ten per cent over the past year to 2,675.

"In the 12 months to June 30 this year, we've also seen the number of people housed increase by 2.4 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year, with the average time taken to house people with the highest level of need falling by three weeks compared to the same period the previous year.

"There are, of course, still too many Tasmanians struggling to find secure, affordable housing and that is at the core of our goal to continue to increase affordable, sustainable housing supply.

"We will build 1,000 more affordable homes and release 200 plots of land for affordable housing over the next four years."

Ms O'Connor said that, in the 12 months to 30 June 2012, a total of 4 162 households received financial assistance through the Private Rental Support Scheme, an increase of 6.4 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year.

"Assisting private rental tenants to sustain their tenancies helps us to alleviate demand for public housing," Ms O'Connor said.

"It's a solid yearly result - but there's always more work to do."

Ms O'Connor said the Progress Chart also showed a continuing commitment to supporting people with a disability.

"We continue to provide supported accommodation for people with a disability and the waiting list remains steady despite increasing demand," she said.

"I recognise that the Progress Chart shows an increase in the waiting list for community access clients.

"While there is still a level of unmet need, we are committed to doing all we can to support Tasmanians with disability.

"The Tasmanian and Australian Governments have been able to commit a record $175 million to disability services this financial year - a significant investment in supporting Tasmanians with disability, their families and their carers.

"By allocating $20 million to support Tasmania's inclusion as a launch site for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, including $2 million in additional funding, we have shown we're serious about improving the quality of life for Tasmanians with disability.

"We will continue to work with both the Commonwealth and the community sector ahead of the launch of the National Disability Insurance Scheme here in Tasmania on 1 July next year."
