2013 Tasmanian Institute of Sport Scholarships Thu 13 December 2012 Michelle O'Byrne Minister for Sport and Recreation The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Michelle O'Byrne, today announced the 2013 Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) scholarships, which will help 90 athletes in 14 sports further develop their careers. Ms O'Byrne said the record number of Tasmanian athletes at the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics, proved the importance of the TIS scholarship program. "The 'Class of 2013' has every chance of building on this success with 11 of this year's Olympians and Paralympians receiving scholarships," she said. "It is exciting that these world-class athletes have been joined by 25 first-time scholarship recipients, who could also be representing Australia in Rio in 2016. "These scholarships ensure Tasmanian athletes have access to the best possible opportunities to realise their sporting ambitions, and to represent Australia in international competition." TIS scholarship recipients benefit from: elite coaching, sports science and technical analysis, strength and conditioning coaching, training and competition equipment, national and international training and competition experiences, career and education advice and financial support. Ms O'Byrne said Tasmania consistently produced world-class athletes above what might be expected of a relatively small population. "This doesn't happen by accident. The Tasmanian Government is proud to contribute $2.19 million this year to allow the TIS to continue to support and develop Tasmania's sporting champions of today and tomorrow." Ms O'Byrne said. Ms O'Byrne said Tasmania's sporting champions provide great role models to the broader community and to younger aspiring athletes. "Our athletes encourage participation in sport and physical activity that makes each of us healthier and our communities stronger, and their successes inspire the next generation of athletes to pursue their dreams. "I look forward to following the careers of this year's TIS scholarship recipients as they go on to represent Tasmania and Australia at the highest levels in their chosen sports."For a fact sheet and list of scholarship holders, contact Nicolas Turner on 0418 538 865.
