As part of the Tasmanian Government’s ongoing commitment to Hobart’s iconic waterfront, Princes Wharf will be renewed to make it a dynamic public place for the people of Tasmania. Princes Wharf will be transformed to make a public space that will be suitable for a variety of public activities and events. The area intended to be initially renewed includes Princes Wharf Shed 1 and its immediate surrounds.
The Tasmanian Government wants to engage you in developing its plan for the renewal of Princes Wharf.
December 2008 Consultations
Some public discussion on the renewal of Princes Wharf Shed 1 has already occurred. This valuable contribution formed the foundation for further conversation.
On 23 December 2008 the Premier David Bartlett unveiled public information boards to launch commencement of the Princes Wharf Renewal consultation process. The community was asked to register their initial comments and interest to participate in a consultation process in 2009.
The comments registered in the December 2008 consultation together with the valuable contribution made through previous discussions about Princes Wharf Shed 1 and research about the success factors of public spaces and multi-functional venues in Tasmania and elsewhere provided the foundation to develop high level Draft Design Objectives to guide the project.
March 2009 Consultations
A series of community consultations were held in late March 2009 to discuss the Draft Design Objectives for the Princes Wharf Renewal to ensure they reflected your views.
Following the March 2009 consultations the Design Objectives were refined to give further emphasis to maintaining an operational port at Princes Wharf Shed 1.
Design Objectives
While retaining its historic features and maintaining its character as a working port, the Princes Wharf Shed 1 Renewal should:
Activate Princes Wharf Shed 1 and surrounds to better connect the Sullivans Cove waterfront corridor from Hunter Street to Salamanca Place while not impacting on the current operational shipping activities of the port.
Provide the functionality to host the Taste Festival, and a broad range of other indoor and outdoor events and activities.
Provide uses, amenity and place management to enhance the waterfront experience of visitors and locals all year round.
Improve permeability from Salamanca Place to the waterfront vista.
Restore Shed 1 to comply with safe building standards for a public venue.
Include sustainable design taking account of social, environmental, economic and natural resource factors.
A selection process for a Design Team was commenced as the consultation process was concluding. On 2 June 2009 the Premier, David Bartlett MP, announced a consortium led by Morris-Nunn + Associates.
Public Exhibition
A six (6) week exhibition to seek public feedback on whether the draft design solution meets the Design Objectives that guide the renewal project was held from 17 August 2009 to 25 September 2009, on site at Shed Number 1.
Feedback from the exhibition is being used to refine the final design which will be submitted for Development Application.
The next stage
A Development Application for the renewal of the site is currently being prepared by the Design Team. It is anticipated that the appellation will be lodged in mid October, with the statutory consultation process of six weeks applying. All the application material will be publicly displayed by the planning authority, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority.
