Peter Gutwein

Premier of Tasmania

PRESS CONFERENCE - 11 AUGUST 2020

Premier Peter Gutwein

I have just been advised by our State Health Commander, that a man in his 60s who was recently transported from a Victorian hospital to the North West Regional Hospital, after receiving medical treatment in Melbourne, has tested positive for coronavirus.

The man had previously tested negative, which is what occurs with patients transferring back from Victorian health facilities, but has subsequently had a positive test.

I’m advised the man was admitted under all the appropriate infection control protocols.

This brings our total coronavirus cases to 228.

We now have, once again, one active case.

I’m advised the man is under appropriate care at the North West Regional Hospital, and I wish him well for his recovery.

It is important to note, that as I have said right through this, we will see cases from time to time, but it is how we respond that matters.

In terms of the protocols that have been followed in this case, I am assured that all infection control protocols were followed, and that the man bears no risk to any other patient or other Tasmanian.

Public Health will provide a further update, if not later today, then once they’ve been through their interview process, first thing in the morning.

I say to Tasmanians once again, make certain that you follow the rules. Continue to make sure you practice good hygiene. Socially distance. Do the right thing.

The rules that we have in place and the protocols we have in place are designed to protect you.

Ensure that you do everything you can to keep yourself safe, your community safe, and those people that you love.
