Graeme Sturges

Graeme has lived in Hobart’s Northern suburbs all of his life and still lives in his first home purchased some 30 years ago.
Graeme stood for Parliament in 2002, with the clear intention of providing a voice for the people; in particular, working families and the battler.
He established the first full-time Southern electorate office, located in Glenorchy, to be easily accessible to constituents.
On 25 May, 2008, he was sworn in as Minister for Infrastructure.
The role of Minister for Infrastructure is a welcome challenge which Graeme hopes to take up with a collaborative and consultative approach with key stakeholders to provide an improved quality of life for all Tasmanians.
Prior to entering the Tasmanian Parliament, Graeme worked as a training officer with Australia Post and went on to become the Tasmanian Branch Secretary of the Communication Workers Union, previously the Australian Postal and Telecommunications Union which, through the process of amalgamation, is now the Communications Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU).
During his time as a union official, Graeme fought to ensure the rights of workers were protected and enhanced.
He was a national ex-member of the CEPU and participated in the negotiation of several EBAs, in particular with Australia Post and Telstra.
Graeme spent some time during the late 1990s in Canada with the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Postal Workers Union looking into regulatory matters affecting Canada’s Postal service.
Graeme was instrumental in developing the successful ‘Hands Off Australia Post’ campaign, staving off the conservative Federal Government’s intention to deregulate Australia Post.
Graeme is the chair of the Tasmanian Road Safety Council and patron of several organisations, including: the RSPCA Hobart Shelter, Kalang Riding for the Disabled, Claremont RSL, Polish Senior Citizens Association of Tasmania and Abbeyfield House Chigwell.
A dedicated family man, Graeme and Jill have been married since 1976 and have two adult children, Ben and Amber, and dogs Daisy the Labrador and Olive the Beagle.
