Vanessa Goodwin was born in Hobart in 1969.
She has lived in Tasmania all her life, apart from a period of postgraduate study overseas, and currently lives at Howrah.
Prior to being elected as the Liberal Member for Pembroke in August 2009, Vanessa worked as a criminologist for the Department of Police and Emergency Management. Vanessa's work in crime prevention included implementing the successful Project U-Turn, which aims to divert young people from vehicle theft in Tasmania, and conducting research on burglary and intergenerational crime.
Vanessa graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Laws (1993) and a Graduate Certificate in Legal Studies (1994) from the University of Tasmania, having worked in the hospitality industry while studying.
In 1995, Vanessa was admitted and enrolled as a practitioner in the Supreme Court of Tasmania, and completed Master of Philosophy in criminology at Cambridge University in 1997. She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in law and criminology from the University of Tasmania in 2006, with a doctoral thesis entitled "Residential burglary and repeat victimisation in Tasmania."
Vanessa's career spans working in the family business, the offices of the Governor of Tasmania and the Chief Justice of Tasmania, an industry association, and the public sector, Vanessa Goodwin brings a broad range of life and employment experience to her current role as Attorney-General, Minister for Justice, Minister for Corrections, Minister for the Arts and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.
A member of Business East and the Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club, Vanessa is an active member of Howrah Rotary Club, and a former President of Kangaroo Bay Rotary Club.
A fitness enthusiast, she enjoys cycling, running and walking her dog Sophie along Howrah Beach. She participated in the Diabetes Tasmania Cycle Sri Lanka Challenge in October 2011 and regularly participates in the Pollie Pedal. Vanessa also enjoys bushwalking. She has walked the Kokoda Track and climbed Federation Peak.
