Planning and Workplace Relations

Planning
Providing an effective and efficient resource management and planning and development system for Tasmania will: promote the sustainable development of natural and physical resources, provide for the fair, orderly and sustainable use and development of air, land and water, and encourage public involvement in resource management and planning.
The Labor Government initiated the Better Planning Outcomes project to keep the land use planning system up-to-date and "in tune’’ with government initiatives and policy directions. The Government is implementing the results of the Better Planning Outcomes project. Legislation has been passed to implement Stage 1 of the review that deals largely with keeping planning schemes up to date. A new regional planning initiative will also assist Councils to frame their planning schemes around regional and local priorities.
Workplace Relations
Tasmanian workers are highly valued by this Government and we fully support an effective state industrial relations system. The
Tasmanian Industrial Commission is important in determining decent wages and conditions for working Tasmanians and the Government supports the reasonable indexation of minimum wages each year through the Commission. The Government remains committed to the principle of collective bargaining.
Through Workplace Standards Tasmania (WST), this Government will continue to improve workplace health and safety. We will promote awareness of occupational health and safety issues in the workplace and improve levels of compliance.
The Government will continue to improve the legislative framework supporting workplace health and safety. It will provide support to the WorkCover Tasmania Board, which oversees the operation of the state’s workers rehabilitation and compensation scheme and reports independently to the Minister.
