Securing Tasmania’s future through strong and connected communities

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is a proud supporter of our State’s vibrant and diverse communities, and we acknowledge and recognise the committed organisations that work to deliver supports and services to Tasmanians across the State.

As well as continuing to support many of the fantastic programs delivered by community organisations, we are building on these supports by delivering over $10 million in the 2021-22 Tasmanian Budget to build strong and resilient communities.

This includes our $300,000 investment to build our vital volunteer workforce through our new Youth Volunteer Army, which will add to our support of Volunteer Tasmania in rebuilding the volunteer workforce, as well as helping to connect generations through learning new skills and encouraging participation.

As part of the 2021-22 Budget, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is also delivering:

  • $125,000 to enable COTA to commence consultation on the review of our Active Ageing Strategy 2017-2022;
  • $880,000 to continue supporting our Respect and Protect Older Tasmanians – Tasmania’s Elder Abuse Strategy (2019-2022), which includes funding for the Tasmanian Elder Abuse Helpline Service;
  • $20,000 per year for our Carers Week community grants program to help carers, carees, and their friends and family, to celebrate;
  • Continued increased peak body funding for community peak organisations, with annual indexation;
  • An increased Tasmanian Men’s Sheds Associations grants program to $175,000 per annum over the next three years, extending eligibility criteria to include wellbeing initiatives;
  • An additional $5.7 million into our Neighbourhood House Network and community facilities, including $2.8 million over two years to Neighbourhood Houses to employ new Community Support workers, $400,000 to improve capacity and governance, and an additional $2 million into extending the Capital Improvement Program;
  • $315,000 over three years to encourage young Tasmanians to participate including Youth Week Grants, the Young Leaders of Tasmania program, and the Tasmanian Bike Collective;
  • $210,000 over three years to support community organisations to increase acceptance of diversity, access to services and participation for LGBTIQ+ Tasmanians through our LGBTIQ+ Grants program;
  • Nearly $5 million over three years to extend our School Lunch pilot to 30 schools, increase emergency food relief and food security funding, establishing Tasmania’s first Food Security Strategy, and increasing funding to Gran’s Van, Louis Van and Missionbeat;
  • $474,000 to support newly arrived and established migrant communities, with a newly redeveloped Multicultural Hub in the North, a Small Business Enterprise Loans Scheme for migrants, grants for Harmony Week and Festival support, funding for the Interpreting Scholar Program, and migrant job readiness programs in the North and south;
  • $2 million to boost the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) Energy Saver Loan and Subsidy Scheme; and
  • Providing $500,000 Community Car and Coach Fund for local community sector organisations to access.

The 2021-22 Tasmanian Budget has demonstrated the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s strong support of our community sector and we acknowledge their vital role in providing opportunities for all Tasmanians to participate socially and economically in our wonderful way of life.

Through the delivery of these investments, we are securing Tasmania’s future by improving the health and wellbeing of Tasmanians and building connected, inclusive and supportive communities.
