2019-20 Budget: Maintaining the Momentum in the Tasmanian Arts Sector

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of Tasmania’s cultural and creative industries and the 2019-20 State Budget builds on the sector’s significant momentum of recent years, as well as investing for further growth.

The 2019-20 State Budget secures our continued support for the Arts with:

  • $200,000 to continue to support arts organisations based in Northern Tasmania to deliver high quality arts activities that strengthen the region’s arts sector, engage and inspire as part of the Northern Arts Program;
  • $200,000 to continue the Government’s commitment to support the Tasmanian Theatre Fund;
  • $1,000,000 to continue supporting the highly-interactive Children’s Exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG), giving young people the opportunity to learn and explore in an exhibition built especially for them; and
  • $160,000 as part of our initiative to support the representation of Tasmanian galleries and artists at two of Australia’s premier International Arts Fairs – Sydney Contemporary and the Melbourne Art Fair.

We are also continuing our support of Tasmanian artists and organisations through our successful and extensive Arts and Cultural Heritage programs and our thriving screen industry continues to grow with the support of our $2 million Screen Innovation Fund.

Critically, key organisations such as the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Ten Days on the Island and the Theatre Royal continue to receive strong support from the Hodgman Liberal Government.

This year’s Budget is about maintaining the momentum and investing for growth, and we know that this is critical for our cultural and creative industries that have experienced a surge in activity in recent years.
